Case Study 1

An example of a ‘train the trainer’ experience

The Brief

We were approached by a medium-sized mentoring company to support a novice group of managers to evolve their virtual workshop design and delivery skills. The group of 8 were super passionate about their subject - but their hurdle?

They had minimal experience in designing learning journeys.

Because of this, the team was experiencing a lack of confidence in their programme and a lack of trust in their own skills… leading to questions, such as:

Have we designed the most effective learning journey for our programme?

How do other people design learning journeys?

Are our virtual workshops designed to give the most to our participants?

As a team do we have all the facilitation skills necessary to deliver the workshops confidently?

To answer these questions… *enter SOF*.

The Solution

By assessing and understanding how learning was already being designed and delivered within the organisation, we were about to build out a 3-part learning journey for the team to follow:

Teaching them how to build a virtual workshop that follows a structure that creates ease for the designer, and engagement, ownership and purpose for the learners.  The practical tips and ideas help move the facilitative trainer away from heavy reliance on powerpoint and towards a flow that provokes their own learners' thinking.

The delivery masterclass explored how the facilitative trainers use their language and body language to build rapport, engagement and connections as they impart their knowledge.

The purposeful practise sessions gave people space to host their own learning sessions, practise using the technology and test out a new exercise or activity.  Everyone received individual feedback from the SOF coach as well as their peers

The Outcome

The group left with a new toolkit of virtual training skills for designing online workshops and new ideas on how to deliver in the workshops.  Confidence levels were super-charged via the practise and coaching sessions.

The solution on paper:

Outcomes: understand how to design an online workshop that follows a structure that creates ease for the designer and creates engagement, ownership, and purpose for the participants

Outcomes: Understand how to use language and body language to build rapport, engagement, and connections

Outcomes: Time to practice what was learnt in the masterclasses. Experience being the facilitator in the room and practicing in a safe environment.

“We came together as a small group of 4. Each person facilitated a 20-minute segment of a workshop or meeting and received feedback from their SOF coach.  Throughout the practices, we noticed what happened in the room and used these as teaching points. Each person received personalised feedback on their virtual facilitation.”
